Reflection and Refraction
A Concept-Builder is an interactive questioning module that presents learners with carefully crafted questions that target various aspects of a concept. Each Concept Builder focuses the learner's attention upon a discrete learning outcome. Questions target that outcome from a variety of angles using multiple difficulty levels or varying activities. The following Concept Builders target concepts in a unit about Reflection and Refraction (including mirrors and lenses).
Law of Reflection
Learning Goal: To use the law of reflection to predict the direction that a light ray will reflect off a mirror if given the incident light ray.
Who Can See Who?
Learning Goal: To use the concept of images and the line of sight to identify what images can be seen in a mirror from a given eye position.
The L•O•S•T Art of Image Description (Curved Mirrors)
Learning Goal: To identify the characteristics (Location, Orientation, Size, and Type) of an image for various object positions in front of a curved mirror - both concave and convex.
Law Enforcement: Refraction
Learning Goal: To use information about the relative speed of light, the optical density, or the index of refraction of two media in order to predict the direction that light will refract at the boundary between the two media.
The L•O•S•T Art of Image Description (Converging Lenses)
Learning Goal: To identify the characteristics (Location, Orientation, Size, and Type) of an image for various object positions in front of a converging lens.
Total Internal Reflection
Learning Goal: To use an understanding of the requirements of total internal reflection in order to identify whether an incident light ray will undergo total internal reflection.
